Naples Royal Palace & Underground secrets
Tour Code: CP08
Duration: 4 hours
TOUR DESCRIPTION
Few meters away our hotel there is Piazza Plebiscito, the most monumental and harmonious square in the city where it stands the vast 17th-century Royal Palace, San Carlo Opera House and the Church of St. Francis.
In the Royal palace you’ll see halls and rooms magnificently decorated contain the original Bourbon furnishings, paintings, statues and porcelain.
Then head underneath the piazza for a walk through the Bourbonic Gallery, an underground tunnel built by King Ferdinand II of Bourbon in 1853 and used as a military connection between the Royal Palace and the barracks. The tunnel includes the 17th-century Carmignana aqueduct, built on top what may have been Roman aqueduct. The tunnel also served as a WWII bomb shelter — be on the lookout for vintage cars and motorbikes left behind after the war. Back at the waterfront, discover the famous 12th-century Castle of the Egg, a 12th-century stronghold constructed by the Normans — a great photo opportunity.
